Dear Burk,
I'm sitting by your bed and we're having a slightly heated discussion about pain meds. So I'm ignoring you. And you're mad. Surprise. Now you've started on dad. He's ignoring you too. Seems to be the best strategy. Because you can't win an argument with a 15 year old.
You survived your trip to the doctor. And dad really did use the driving lawn mower. They wheeled you out to the backyard and got you in the little trailer and dad pulled you up. I'm sure it was quite a sight. They did more x-rays and luckily you haven't done more damage. The trip home wasn't quite as smooth. Dad and uncle Jim forgot they weren't 30 anymore and they tried to get you up a few stairs on their own. Uncle Jim pulled, dad pushed, and mom watched in horror. It ended with Jim on his back, you on your back feet straight in the air, and dad on top of the wheelchair. Dad got cut and since he's on blood thinner he was bleeding all over. You had to roll over and crawl to bed. Oh boy.
Mike's at scout camp so I packed up the kids and we're staying here for a few days to help. Yesterday you were much nicer. Funny even. And sometimes crazy talking. You kept reminding me that you broke your legs. And that you were run over by a car and still alive. You drink enough to hydrate the entire family. You have a cast on your right foot and a boot on your left. My girls were very excited to sign it. You let them. No surprise. You're always nice to the kids.
You're obsessed with your lost coat, wallet, and shoes. You think the cops stole them when you got hit. Always blaming those dirty cops for stuff. I told them your coat probably got cut off when you were hit. "don't paramedics know how to use zippers?" I laughed.
You also think someone tried to slit your throat while you were in the hospital and you "have the scar to prove it" (your trach scar). I told you that was true but Kelli and I came in the room just as they were doing it and we saved your life. So you owe us.
I helped with night shifts last night. Mom worries when dad is on duty because he has that special gene men grow when they have kids where they can sleep through any.thing. You try to get out of bed while dad sleeps. I told him we need to put bells on your leg so he can hear when you move them.
Today you are more agitated. And very grumpy about the "tyrants" who won't give you pain meds when you want them. We knew this would be a problem. You go after mom the hardest. I just keep telling you I'll get them in a minute. Dad ignores you. There's no doubt you're in pain but our sympathy levels are pretty worn. Sucks for you.
We still can't leave you in the room alone. The one time we did, for 5 minutes, you tried to walk and fell. You're still sore from that. You still think you're "badass" and can do anything. And there is no telling you otherwise.
We were hoping with time things would get better. But as you are awake more and learning how to be more mobile it's still a full time job. I don't know what we'll do when Jim goes home. He's been sooooo helpful. Somehow we'll find a way. Or we'll just have to wheel you out to pepperwood drive and put a sign on your lap that says "free". I'm kidding. Sort of.
