Sunday.

Dear Burk,
Thankfully things have settled down a bit.  I use the term "settled" very liberally considering nothing is very settling about this whole situation.  I think one of my last letters may have caused some alarm.  But with that alarm, it brought some much needed help.
We finally found a combination of drugs that would help you sleep more.  Merciful for all of us.  The first night was nothing short of horrific.  Night two, dad successfully knocked you out to insure we wouldn't have a repeat.  You slept much of the next day.
Today you seem more alert.  Definitely less "craziness" thanks to a new drug regimen.
Uncle Jim drove all the way from California to help cover shifts.  And to help with the sanity level in the house.  He was definitely a godsend.  Uncle Craig and Aunt Marge have also been helping.  Kelli comes in the middle of the night to relieve mom and dad so they can at least get a few hours of sleep.  I've been trying to help with shifts as much as I can during the day.  Carter is still a little wary of you since you barked at me.  Although he did give you a small wave goodbye today so maybe he'll come around.
You're still pretty grumpy.  Mean is more like it.  But for now, we tolerate it.
One of your complaints on Friday was the "damn mukluks" on your legs.  You wanted them off.  Tanner asked what mukluks were.  "Eskiman footware" you replied.  Eskiman was your way to pluralize Eskimo. Apparently your ace bandages look like mukluks.  I guess they kind of do.  Mom still doesn't find comments like that funny.  I still laugh every time I think about it.  Eskiman footware.  Oh boy.
I'm hoping the 24 hours bedside babysitting can end sooner rather than later.  We don't have a lot of people involved in the shifts since we have to be selective about who can do it (because of the things that come out of your mouth and the bathroom duty) and it gets waring really fast.
I imagine there is some judgment out there about how we handle things.  But it is what it is.  We do the best we can with the circumstances we have.  And though I know that sometimes loving someone sometimes requires us to let them suffer, I don't think this is exactly the time for that.  You are our brother.  And you are mom and dad's son.  You're family.  I believe God put us in families so that someone would love us when no one else will (or possibly should) and someone will take care of us when no one else will.  Regardless of what you do or say, family is family.  Pretty genius plan if you ask me.  And lucky for you, you scored two of the best parents God ever created.  Without them, you would surely be dead.  But you already know that.
