Dear Burk,
I tried to talk my girls into coming to visit you this morning. They actually wanted to stay home and watch Disney Channel. I think after Mya's last visit and her description to Jaida they weren't too pumped to come watch you sleep and "stand by your pee". Don't worry though. You'll get plenty of them once you get home to mom and dad's. They're gonna love all the buttons on your hospital bed.
Mom and Dad came to visit you this morning. Mom said you were very "sleepy and grumpy". You're very docile now. Complete opposite of what you have been. You don't try to communicate much. Or at all. Your sitters say you never really sleep. They give you a pretty powerful sleeping medication at night, plus heavy doses of pain killer. But you never fall into a true sleep. Just dosing here and there. So you're tired. All the time.
Mom and Dad met with your social worker. From what I gather, she's the lady in charge of your overall care. She coordinates everything and keeps track of how you're doing. She's also the one who decides when you're ready to go home. You definitely will not be going to a rehabilitation center. Turns out they don't like people with no insurance. Wasn't Obamacare supposed to fix that?
I don't think they'll send you home with a feeding tube. But I keep getting different answers whether or not you can come home with the trach. Hopefully you'll have that out before you're released. One less thing for everyone to worry about.
We're told you won't be released from the hospital until mid to late next week. Which only gives us a few days to get a room set up for you in the basement. And then figure out how we'll get you home. How we'll get you in the house. How we'll get you in your bed. And on and on and on. Definitely some tricky logistics to work out. We may just have to put you on a mattress and slide you down the stairs. Hmmm... that's actually not a bad idea. We did it when we were kids. It'd probably still be fun. And much easier than carrying you. I'll run it by mom. I'm sure she'll love the idea just like she did when we were little.
I think as you become more aware and more awake (well, sort of awake) you seem more distant. The reality of this whole thing is probably sinking in for you now. And, well, it sucks. Bad.
One day at a time. Maybe one hour at a time. One minute.
And together, somehow, we'll all make it through this. We hope.
